KDE Lock screen on lid close
On openSUSE KDE 3.5.7, Kpowersave 0.7.x you can turn off the screen lock when you shut your laptop lid by going to 'Configure Kpowersave' (right click the battery/adapter icon in the system tray). Click the general settings tabs and look for 'Lock screen'. Un-cross "lock screen on lid close".
Click ok. And should be done.

Will I move back to KDE?
After using KDE on and off over a few years it's not really changed. I find the artists are obsessed with blue. Icons, panels, window borders, backgrounds, all blue. Blue, blue, blue, lots of blue. That's fine if you like that kind of thing or just blue. I also dislike the way konqueror works too. So I have stuck with beryl/gnome or fluxbox for a while now.
Though after seeing kde4 screenshots with plasma, KDE's new desktop shell, I think I might be tempted to try it out again. Kwin has supposedly been given composite effects like Compiz Fusion.
Since I don't like konqueror there is now an alternative file manager called Dolphin.
It looks promising. Defiantly better looking than vista. Makes me wonder what all the fuss was about longhorn/vista screenshots. Windows XP with a black theme and a few effects. Yeah amazing. It has nothing original unlike this project. At the moment its still in beta, but runs well on top of kde4 desktop.

The importance of a back up environment
I think its important for any ubuntu, linux user, and unix user to have a back up desktop environment.
A few days ago I had problems with gnome. Put basically it crashed. After which I couldn't login without a crash at the start of loading it. I'm guessing it might have been a problem with the previous session and gnome wasn't liking it. So what can you do in a situation like this?
Well if your like me, you know your bash, then its not the end of the world. You could try installing another desktop environment. I installed the xfce desktop package and logged into that without fault. After that gnome was able to login fine. All you have to do is start ubuntu in recovery mode or from the login screen (gdm) select a terminal login. Recovery mode is normally the 2nd option on the loader (when you start your machine a menu appears with all the operating systems.) This will start a terminal.
Once you have a prompt ready you will need to connect to the internet or network. This could be different for everyone. I have a dial script for a usb modem so I run that. When your connected you can install a chosen package.
For XFCE
sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
For something smaller, fluxbox
sudo aptitude install fluxbox
Make fluxbox selectable from gdm
echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc
If you wanted to you could install kde but I think its too big really for a backup desktop environment.

Set Firefox as the default browser in Kubuntu (KDE)
If you dont like to use Konqueror for web pages then you can use this:
- Open Konqueror
- Go to Settings > Configure Konqueror
- Go to file associations
- Find Text in the 'Known type' box, expand and click html
- You will see in 'Application preference order' that Konqueror is above firefox. Change it so that firefox is above (or add firefox if its not there and put it above Konqueror).
Amarok 1.4.5 is out
Probably my favorite music media player (apart from songbird of course). I installed it on kubuntu, adding a repository. Something you need to take time with if you don't know what your doing although it is simply done.
improvements include:
- An integrated Shoutcast stream directory.
- Support for custom labels. Organize your music how you want.
- Magnatune redownload manager
- Improved sound quality when using the equalizer with xine.
